0 comments
Did we tell you that Arunachal Diary has a subsidiary called AG Design that looks after the design needs of Arunachal Diary? Of late, this design house has been taking assignments from the clients (NGO's etc., based in Arunachal Pradesh) approaching AG Design for their design requirements right from print media to logo design to website design, development and hosting.

And it was quite a hectic week for team AG Design as it was giving final touches to the official site of Popi Sarmin Society befor handing it over to the society for it's official launch yesterday.

The Popi Sarmin Society's official site was launched by Chief Guest Padi Richo, Hon'ble MLA and Parliamentary Secretary for Land Management & Labour and Employment in a special function held at Hotel Arun Subansiri, Itanagar yesterday.

When proper appears improper, improper appears proper

0 comments

Is this some kind of a racial attack on Apatani? Three cold blooded murders in three years in Ziro, the home of Apatanis! Two outside Ziro this year itself. List is long when we talk of last three, four years. The people of Ziro have been feeling the pain for long. They have been waiting for law to take its own course and found that laws are not equal to all. They took out peaceful procession praying for justice and security of life in many occassions but their cries fell on deaf ears. Non-violence used to be a sign of strength but to them it appears to be a sign of weakness. Tolerance is virtue of brave heart but it made them appear to be chicken hearted.

Aggrieved by the murder of an unsuspecting school boy, walking on the road, for no reason, a group of concerned citizen of Ziro along with friends and well wisher of the deceased's family call on Deputy Commissioner with same old strategy of prayer and petition but they found that she was only as good as when she was absent. Her fleeing the scene in such fragile law and order situation is on every body’s lips (misplaced belief or real, whatever). Moreover, Deputy Commissioner is quoted to have made an escapist remark. “What can district administration do as long as the people of the valley brew wine in their home?”

Well, dozen of registered wine shops are doing businesses in Hapoli even as curfew has been clamped on to defuse the tension.

Having got the spark that was needed to ignite the fire, thing changed for good or for bad on the day of November 3. Unarmed and non-violent group of people turn into a mob. Stones, sticks and wooden logs lying on roadsides become their tool. DC office, Police Station and DC’s residence were ransacked. One car was burnt and some others damaged. There was no visible resistance from police and security personals. “Indeed!” The mob said “if District Administration can’t do anything for its citizen what’s the use of office buildings and police station.”

Unfortunate! Citizen took the law in their hand. A condemnable act in strongest term .

What worried me is the reaction of the people in general towards this act of misdeed. Wave of satisfaction spread across the valley on news of ransacking of DC Office Complex and Police Station.This is an eye opener, I’m told by hundreds of them. It’s horrible! This is not the Apatanis I know. It never happened in history of Ziro. I hardly see any regret shown by ordinary Apatanis for what the mob has done. What used to be a proper thing became improper and improper thing became proper. Who is to blame?

A week passed by but their anger has not died yet.There is total public distrust towards district administration. Some sort of examplery punishment to the murderers only would give some healing touch.

Amidst all these chaos there was one good news: anger was vented against district administration but no single word of communal tone was heard.

Importantly, this episode has exposed the state of policing in one of the most populous and happening town of Arunachal Pradesh. Around two hours of mayhem but police were nowhere controlling the mob. One can guage from this as to how crime can be controlled in the town.

It is a difficult time for people as well as district administration. Damages have been made to the public properties and to the psyche of the people. But a line from P.B Shelley’s poem worth a quote “If winter has come, would spring be far behind.”

Myoko wishes

Team Arunachal Diary wishes it's reader a very Happy Myoko!

I know I've been bit late in wishing you all. Infact, I'd have forgotten that it's Myoko time had I not called Cho yesterday. When asked what's up, he said, "well, I'm preparing myself with my friends to go all out at Hong Village". I couldn't make out what he meant immediately, but then I realized, it's Myoko time and he along with his friends are preparing courtesy visit to 'Hong' friends for a bout of 'O' (rice beer). I said,"Enjoy". Did you asked, what about me? Well, I wouldn't be able to make it to Myoko this time. Poor me :(

But, don't you dare miss 'Myoko'. Wish you happy wining and dining again.

While at Arunachal Diary, you may like to read earlier posts on 'Myoko'. Follow the link below:

The actor of internationally acclaimed Arunachalee feature film 'Sonam', Hage D. Appa has been cast in a Bollywood flick 'Shivam' directed by Anshuman Barua where he will be playing a cop. The film would be shot extensively at Guwahati, Shillong and Mumbai and is expected to hit the theatres at the end of this year.

A farce reporting in NE TV

14 comments

Electronic media resorting to farce and unverified report is not new. This time around NE TV has shown that it is not far behind.

The special report on a new insurgent outfit National Liberation Council of Taniland is a headline of the channel since last 24 hours. The report says:

  • the outfit is active in Arunachal Pradesh as well in Assam-Arunachal border areas;
  • it receves aids and training from China;
  • it has forged links with ULFA;
  • it’s headquarter is at Ziro (which the report says is only 15 km from Indo-China boder);
  • the outfit is fighting for cause of Apatanis and demands separate homeland for Apatanis;
  • H Tamang, SP Papumpare denied having report of the outfit being active as of now. He said that there was instances of extortion notice being served in name of this outfit by some misguided youth who got training from NSCN(IM) in the April last. The Commander in Chief along with 19 others and some youths from NSCN(IM) outfit were arrested and the outfit was cracked down. He also was not in opinion that this outfit received training and aids from China.

The reporters of NE TV whosoever they are should know while preparing the report that:

· Ziro is hundreds of km away from Indo-China border;

· ‘TANI’ in National Liberation Council of Taniland is nothing to do with Apatanis. TANILAND as I could understand from various media report is the area comprising a part of Arunachal and of Assam inhabited by so called descendents of Abo Tani such as Adi, Apatani, Nyishi, Galo, Mishings etc.;

· Dragging the good name of Apatani community into the report is being resented by Apatanis across the country.

Happy Myoko

5 comments
Seems like yesterday when we observed 'Myoko' but I've to come out of stupor and believe that a year has passed by since we observed 'Myoko' and it is now turn of 'Hiichi' belt to observe 'Myoko' this year and they would be officially declaring 'Myoko' open with 'Sama Piniing' tonight.

Well, wish you all a Happy Myoko from team Arunachal Diary.

So, what now? Being guest this year, we are planning to do a round to host villages to taste their 'O'-local rice beer, that they had so diligently prepared this past couple of weeks to welcome us, what else :).

Here we come host villages, keep your 'O' ready ;)

For uninitiated, find about relevance of 'Myoko' here or you can go through a bit of mythology on 'Myoko' and a Photo-feature here.

Apatani Dictionary - A Review

14 comments
Apatani Dictionary: Let's write in Apatani by Habung Donyi is a milestone in preservation and development of Apatani language.
-G. Tallo

Apatani Dictionary Cover PageThe declining trend of using Apatani by young Apatanis in their day to day conversation has been a cause of concern since long. There has been an urgent need to develop, popularize and preserve the language. In response, some pioneering works on Apatani language have been done by the likes of I.M Simon, Tasso Sai, Takhe Kani, Mihin Kaning and others. Habung Donyi’s "Apatani Dictionary: Let’s write in Apatani" stood out among the best of the related works done so far. It has immense bearing on the development and preservation of the language.

This formidable work of Habung Donyi runs into second revised edition and was released on the occasion of Dree festival, 2008. It is an Apatani to English dictionary; contains around 11,000 words, has 266 pages plus 23 additional pages of explanatory notes on letters, pronounciation and word formation involving verb roots. The dictionary is priced at Rs. 150 and available at all leading bookstalls in Ziro and Itanagar. A must reference book every Apatani household should adorn their bookshelves.

The second revised edition saw some welcome improvement over the first edition. The looking for words made easier by entering the words formed from similar verb roots as sub-entry of the verb root. That is, the words aba, abo, ado, ama, ane, ato etc., are found under the verb root ‘a’ (to come). The letter ñ has been omitted and the letter n or ng are being used in its place depending upon the stress on the letter n. This author feels that the letter e (e underlined) too need to be omitted to avoid inconvenience in writing and typing. The letter e can be directly used for two different phonetic sound in Apatani i.e., e as in pet, set etc., and e /e/ as in tader /tad…r/ (1. n. intestinal worm, 2 adj. audible). Besides, this author feels that some compound words are entered in the dictionary wrongly as single words which at times can confuse the reader e.g, akhiingamii means confused (should be written as akhiin-amii or akhiing-amii), abhinanii means swing (should be written as abhi nanii or abhi-nanii), adhunarun means idiot, foolish (should be written as adhun-arun).

The dictionary being first of the kind- Apatani to English dictionary, compiling more than ten thousand words with precise meanings would have been daunting task for the author. However, he has done it commendably well. With this commendable work of Habung Donyi a milestone is reached in development and preservation of Apatani language. Nevertheless, we have miles to go before the mission is accomplished.

The another work of Habung Donyi, the Anglo-Apatani Dictionary (English to Apatani dictionary), which is already in the market, is worth a see.

It's month of January-the month when 'Murung' Ritual of Apatani is observed; how could AD let the month pass by without a post on this particular ritual. So I'm sharing slideshow of the photos that I took during  Penii procession (part of Murung ritual). Enjoy!

P.S. Some images are not relevant to  'Murung' Ritual but was captured because it caught my attention :)

Addiction versus De-addiction

-Gyati Tado (Tadu)
President, Union of Apatani Educated Unemployed Youth (UAEUY)

Alcoholism and drug addiction are two ignored social evils which endorse for weakening people's moral fibre. It spells disaster not only for the addict but also to his family and society as a whole. If we take a closer look of social and cultural fabric of our society, the "O" culture is most predominant. At this stage of globalization and modernization we surely are on backstage and struggling for identity. Every man of prudent mind can understand the evil effects of alcoholism and drug abuse but nobody is concerning and for why? Being a social animal we can atleast appreciate Apatani Youth Association (A.Y.A) and District Administration, Ziro for their noble initiative i.e., 'Mission De-Addiction' by banning GUTKA.

Legally, it is a crime in which the addict himself is criminal as well as victim. However, sociologists and criminologists reveals through investigation that a major chunk of the crimes are committed by a person in abuse of narcotic drugs and alcoholism. Under the influence of intoxication the person loses self- control and may develop criminal tendency which results into acts of misbehaving, indecency, aggression or assault at any moment.

The process of addiction starts when person makes stimulant like alcohol and narcotic drugs as relief for stress, depression, tension, family discord, discontentment etc. In broader sense the spread of these evils are mainly due to apparent failure in personal life, unemployment especially among youths, lack of parental care, careless habits of elders at home that arise interest among younger to taste it, negative influence of peer group and the recent development in pharmaceutical and medical sciences having capable to produce variety of toxic synthetic substances like nail polish remover, dendrite etc. Among the youngster it happens as fun or enjoyment on experimental basis at first and gradually good majority of them turn out to be habitual. Due to addiction they detach themselves from worldly affairs. Consequently, the individual's health gets affected as mental faculty of an alcoholic does not function in a normal way and delinquency especially juvenile delinquency follows addiction.

To eradicate this twin menace there is a dire need to evolve an effective control mechanism to check unrestricted production and their sale in open market. Accordingly, the Constitution of India under Article 47 mandates that the State should endeavor to bring about prohibition of intoxicating beverages and drugs which are injurious to public health. But society cannot blame administration all the time for eroding social and cultural fabric mainly caused by individual's irresponsible act. It is a part of individual's duty to stay away or abstain/refrain from devastating melody of alcoholism and drug addiction. Administration, however, has corresponding duties to undertake corrective measures as India being one of signatory to International Convention on Drugs which reiterated faith in human dignity and the legitimate aspiration of humankind for a decent life. It insist the need for generating universal consciousness of, and determination to battle, the drug problems in all it's pervasive forms at national, regional and international level. Under the auspices of United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961 under proviso (1) of Article 38 and International Convention on Psychotropic Substances, 1971 under proviso (1) of Article 20 has emphasized the need for prevention of abuse of psychotropic substances and early identification, treatment, education, after- care, rehabilitation and social reintegration of the person involved. The Indian Parliament by taking legislative measures has enacted the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (Ammenament) Act, 1988 to tackle these menace in socio-legal perspective. Under Section 71 of the Act, it provides for rehabilitation and reformative measure for an addictive whether he is an offender or not. Thus the Act seeks to prevent people from the dangers of drug-abuse.

Despite existence of various tough and reformative laws the menace of alcoholism and drug addiction cannot be effectively controlled without the helping hand of voluntary social organization in cooperation with Government Authorities and self-realization of the addicts. To check these evils, every sections of the society should stand unitedly by saying ''No" to narcotic drugs & alcohol. Besides, the addicted should be given a chance for treatment, rehabilitation and social reintegration and that would definitely turn out to be Midas touch to our society. Due to acute problems of drug-abuse in North -Eastern States the Government of India has decided to provide 100% liberal grants to start drug de-addiction centres in these states. For this noble venture, a voluntary social organization should come forward to bring awareness about it's harmful effects and rehabilitation. As the principle and purpose of reformative penology is to "destroy criminality in a human being without destroying humanity in a criminal."

With Tanii agun (Apatani) being considered 'Endangered Language' on the verge of becoming extinct due to fascination of the Tanii's towards National Language Hindi and the global language English, an immediate attention was needed to preserve, promote and document Tanii agun lest it become extinct.

In this line, to preserve and promote Tanii agun a wonderful effort was/is being made by NPR and PB through their blog Let us save Tanii. Following suit, here is another wonderful blog by GT - Tanii Agun Lu Sa (Let's speak Apatani), which aims at documenting the language. Head to this blog for a peek at the effort.
