Chinese Visa to an Arunachalee-Was it a History in making or a case of hogging the Limelight?

It was on 25th November, 2007. A history was in the making-a history of getting Chinese Visa by an Arunachalee. The applicant was frantically waiting for his visa to be cleared with his finger's crossed, whether his visa would be cleared or not-he being an Arunachalee, at a Coffee Shop of Samrat Hotel and at the eleventh hour his visa got cleared by the Chinese Embassy, finally after initial hesitation. He rushed to the IGI airport with loose visa sheet attached to his passport (no. 1503076) and boarded the fight to China amidst raised eyebrows from officials at airport on how on earth an Arunachalee got visa to China. So they say history was created. Well, that's how the media portrayed it.

The news about this China visit by an Arunachalee was broke by the Head of the Department of the Institution where this Arunachalee worked as a lecturer and all the hell broke loose.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, accused the lecturer of using fraudulent means to get his visa to China, thereby maligning the name of the institution, the state whom he represented and the country as a whole and promised a disciplinary action against him when he returned and issued a memo to HoD for issuing a press release without his knowledge and without University's consent.

But in a dramatic move, all of a sudden, VC Prof. K.C. Belliappa made a 'U' turn and retracted his earlier statement saying that the 'actual factual fact' to obtain the visa to China by his colleague has been ascertained and that he (Marpe Sora) didn't gave false affidavit while applying for the visa.

"I have now ascertained the actual factual facts with the return of Sora to the campus. In the affidavit, Sora has testified that he is an Arunachalee by birth and that he is teaching in Rajiv Gandhi University, Prof. Belliappa said.

The address at Guwahati mentioned in the affidavit is where Sora's brother-in-law lives. Sora was a resident in that house while he was pursuing his M. Tech course in Tezpur University, Assam. Hence, all the three statement made by Sora in the affidavit are factually correct and there is no iota of falsehood in the affidavit."

Now, one wonders, why Prof. Beliappa made this sudden 'U' turn in his statement after vouching to take stern disciplinary action for using fraudulent means in his earlier statement? Being a VC of premier institute, shouldn't he have verified the fact prior to issuing any press statement instead of retracting later? Or was it the case of 'why should I be left behind when others (read HoD) are hogging the limelight of this historical event'? Or was it that New Delhi had asked the VC to do so i.e., to retract his statement (VC stated that he was getting lot's of phone calls in the wake of his statement in the press about the 'false affidavit')? But then, why would New Delhi like to do so? Hmm..sounds rational.

If the VC retracted his statement at the behest of New Delhi, the only sensible reasoning that I can arrive at is-in order to reassure that New Delhi is keen to solve the Boundary problem and they have made significant achievement through diplomatic talks, to the people of Arunachal, which has, off late become quite vocal about the Indian government's stand on Arunachal vis-à-vis Indo-China boundary row over Arunachal, the statement of VC had to be changed, who was hell bent on proving (stated that he had documentary proof) that Marpe Sora got visa not as an Arunachalee but as a resident of Assam, in which case all the hailing of positive shift in Chinese diplomacy towards the vexed boundary dispute would all  go down the drain.

Now that VC has corroborated the 'factual facts' (at whose behest or for whatever reasons) and stated that Marpe Sora had clearly stated that he was an Arunachalee by birth in his affidavit, should we say history was made by Marpe Sora becoming first Arunachalee to visit China on Chinese visa? No, if we go by the claims pouring in. In a Letter to the Editor that appeared in The Arunachal Times dated December 12, one Vishal P Nabam has claimed to have visited China on 90 days visa from Chinese Embassy, New Delhi during the month of October 2006 and that he knows several other Arunachalees who have visited China before him and that all the media hailing Marpe Sora as the first Arunachalee to visit China is 'absurd and misguiding'.

"I would like to make a statement before your esteemed readers and the people of Arunachal Pradesh that I do not accept at all that Marpe Sora is the first Arunachal born citizen to obtain visa to visit China because I had visited China in October, 2006 by duly obtaining a 90 days visa from the Chinese Embassy, New Delhi. I reached Beijing on October 4, 2006 and stayed at Jillin, Changchun province, China for 7 days. I climbed the Great Wall of China on October 11, 2006 and obtained the Hero Card. I have seen Mao Testung Square, World Trade Center (WTC) and many other historical places.

I am not giving a counter claim that I am the first one to visit China but I would like to simply tell that I know that there are many Arunachalees who had visited China before me."

I was wondering, why now? Why he didn't come out with this information earlier? Was it that he couldn't take the media attention that a fellow Arunachalee was getting for being the first Arunachalee to visit China and that he needed to share the limelight?

Whether History was set or not, whether all the media statements and claims made for hogging the limelight or not- but this entire event has made one thing clear that an Arunachalee like any other Indians are granted visa to visit China until and unless he/she is on an Indian Government Sponsored Programme.

Conventional v/s Digital Way

Last night I was going through the back issues of now discontinued ZIRO MIRROR, when I came across the cartoon that I did for the 5^th issue of that fortnightly.

It was done in a zippy in flat 15 mins time as the issue was ready at press, about to roll but hold back for want of cover page. Introspecting, I thought, how it would have looked and how much time it would have taken had I gone the digital way. So, I sat on my computer and with the help of Adobe Illustrator 9.0, I managed to come up with this with caption and all (see below) and guess what, it took me whopping 6 hours to redo that cartoon the digital way. Quite a time you would say-I agree and it reminded me that I have lots to brush up my knowledge on Illustrator. For instance, how to apply hatch so as to give that pen and ink look. :)

Jairampur December 10: In the milieu of the ensuing Pangsau Pass Winter Festival 2008, Sri. Setong Sena, Speaker, Arunachal Legislative Assembly graced the occasion by pressing “Enter” button to launch the long awaited pictorial website www.amazingarunachal.com, here in Jairampur, today. The picturesque website is dedicated to the prodigious land of the dawn lit mountains, Arunachal Pradesh and its colorful tribes.

The website is firm travail of three devoted nature enthusiast hailing from different background combined with common interest, namely Sri.Arif Siddiqui, Jairampur, an engineer by profession, a well known photographer and the brain behind the conception of the website, Mr. Kamlesh Mehta, Mumbai, Art Director of an advertising agency, enticed by the natural beauty of Arunachal Pradesh extended unselfishly countless working hours for free to shape, design and upload the website and Sri.Tom Simai, Jairampur, a local and die hard nature enthusiast, who’s creative genius has added more fun to it.

The website is a simple effort of the three nature devotees who has came together with the reason to craft a stage to unravel the elegance of Arunachal Pradesh to the outside world. Moreover, the acrimonious experience of being unable to publicize and broadcast the first PPWF 2007 throughout the globe has inspired to launch this website. Thanks to the non-cooperation of the concerned agencies, the idea of creating the website was conceived. As last year without any publicity and broadcasting in local media, the festival ventured ahead through mouth of words and attracted millions of people.

In this small and simple inaugural event, Sri. Sena extended his heartfelt gratitude to the youths involved in the creation of the website. He urged further that the IPR, Tourism, NIC and other Government websites should carry the Link of this website for the world to access and accumulate the startling photographs and general information about the amazing peoples and astonishing places of AP.

The Zilla Parishad Chairman, Sri. Izmir Tikhak who was also present appreciated the contribution of the local youths and he speculated that participation of youths will guide and persuade the strayed youths to partake and familiarize with the modern technologies.

Furthermore, the launch of the website has inspired and entrusted new zeal of enthusiasm in the tireless spirit of the natives connected to the Pangsau Pass Winter Festival. The previous year’s success has heaved the anticipation this time and to redeem the expectations all efforts has been initiated. Regarding this matter, chain of meeting is organized regularly by the festival committee under the proficient supervision of Sri Sena. Every trivial aspect is cared and inspected. As the big day is inclining closer, the local inhabitants are enthusiastically preparing to welcome the domestic and international guests.

Chinese Visa to an Arunachalee-A Positive Diplomatic Stance or a Slip Up?

When Arunachalee’s had been denied visa to China on several occasions earlier, it came as a surprise to me when an Arunachalee, teaching Computer Science at Rajiv Gandhi University, Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh was granted visa to visit China on a 2-week long academic tour organized by India China Alliance Center of CII. The local and national media hailed this a positive diplomatic stance of China towards solving the vexed Indo-China border row over Arunachal. I was not quite convinced with the media about this positive change in Chinese diplomacy, though. When China has been strongly voicing their assertion over Arunachal and denying visa to an Arunachalee saying that one does not need a visa to visit it’s own country (I should say, a very clever stance taken by the Chinese to assert their territorial claim), I wondered, how could China change it’s stance over Arunachal overnight? Am I being skeptical? Or is it that the marathon talks by Special Representatives on Boundary issue has bore fruit and has mellowed down the Chinese to change it’s stance on Arunachal? But then, what about the reports of incursions by Chinese army deep inside Arunachal of which the union government says is the difference in perception of LAC (Line of Actual Control)?

Everything didn’t seem quite falling into place until the report of disciplinary action against Marpe Sora-the lone Arunachalee to get Chinese Visa and memo to Dr. Sikhar Kumar Sharma, Head of Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Rajiv Gandhi University appeared in the local daily.

Apparently, for obtaining Chinese Visa, the lecturer from Arunachal University had retorted to fraudulent means by producing false affidavit before the CEO of India China Alliance Center, stating that he had been permanent resident of Guwahati for the last ten years and Piyush Bahl, Chief Executive Officer, India China Alliance Center had made a special request to the Chinese embassy in New Delhi to grant Visa to Sora vouching that he is cent percent permanent resident of state of Assam. The Chinese Embassy, after initial hesitation, as ‘affidavit’ declared Sora as born Arunachalee, finally cleared his visa to China for academic tour.

“Armed with documents, the VC (Vice Chancellor, RGU) revealed that Sora produced a “false” affidavit before the CEO of India China Alliance Center, giving “false address” that he was permanent resident of Assam’s Guwahati where he was residing for last ten years, to get the Chinese visa, whereas Sora, a native of Nari under Tellam in East Siang District is presently residing in Maharlagun and working with the RGU in Arunachal itself since September 7, 2005.

RGU Department of Computer Science and Engineering lecturer Marpe Sora had obtained the Chinese Visa through fraudulent method, the Vice Chancellor informed.

Piyush Bahl made a special request to the Chinese embassy in Delhi to issue a Visa to Sora communicating that he is a lecturer of a prestigious Central University and was keen to join his first ever educational tour to China. He further vouched that Sora was cent percent permanent resident of the state of Assam.”

So, it was a case of 'slip-up' on account of visa issuing authority due to misinformed place of residence and not a 'positive-shift' in China's Diplomacy as was hailed, afterall. This China-sojourn by the local only brought himself disciplinary action by his authority for using 'false affidavit' to obtain visa and a memo to his Head of Department for issuing press release about his visit to China in local media without prior consent and approval of the University. How sad! And we thought this vexed border dispute is nearing end with China recognising Arunachal a part of India by granting visa to an indigenous Arunachalee. :(

Am I being skeptical? Or is it that the marathon talks by Special Representatives on Boundary issue has bore fruit and has mellowed down the Chinese to change it’s stance on Arunachal? But then, what about the reports of incursions by Chinese army deep inside Arunachal of which the union government says is the difference in perception of LAC (Line of Actual Control)?

Everything didn’t seem quite falling into place until the report of disciplinary action against Marpe Sora-the lone Arunachalee to get Chinese Visa and memo to Dr. Sikhar Kumar Sharma, Head of Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Rajiv Gandhi University appeared in the local daily.

Apparently, for obtaining Chinese Visa, the lecturer from Arunachal University had retorted to fraudulent means by producing false affidavit before the CEO of India China Alliance Center, stating that he had been permanent resident of Guwahati for the last ten years and Piyush Bahl, Chief Executive Officer, India China Alliance Center had made a special request to the Chinese embassy in New Delhi to grant Visa to Sora vouching that he is cent percent permanent resident of state of Assam. The Chinese Embassy, after initial hesitation, as ‘affidavit’ declared Sora as born Arunachalee, finally cleared his visa to China for academic tour.

“Armed with documents, the VC (Vice Chancellor, RGU) revealed that Sora produced a “false” affidavit before the CEO of India China Alliance Center, giving “false address” that he was permanent resident of Assam’s Guwahati where he was residing for last ten years, to get the Chinese visa, whereas Sora, a native of Nari under Tellam in East Siang District is presently residing in Maharlagun and working with the RGU in Arunachal itself since September 7, 2005.

RGU Department of Computer Science and Engineering lecturer Marpe Sora had obtained the Chinese Visa through fraudulent method, the Vice Chancellor informed.

Piyush Bahl made a special request to the Chinese embassy in Delhi to issue a Visa to Sora communicating that he is a lecturer of a prestigious Central University and was keen to join his first ever educational tour to China. He further vouched that Sora was cent percent permanent resident of the state of Assam.”

So, it was a case of 'slip-up' on account of visa issuing authority due to misinformed place of residence and not a 'positive-shift' in China's Diplomacy as was hailed, afterall. This China-sojourn by the local only brought himself disciplinary action by his authority for using 'false affidavit' to obtain visa and a memo to his Head of Department for issuing press release about his visit to China in local media without prior consent and approval of the University. How sad! And we thought this vexed border dispute is nearing end with China recognising Arunachal a part of India by granting visa to an indigenous Arunachalee. :(

AIDS in Arunachal is like a balloon that is being inflated stealthily and is getting ready to burst out.

Not long ago, I watched a movie “Philadelphia” on HBO channel for second time in which actor Tom Hanks portrayed the character of a lawyer who was sacked from his law firm because he had an AIDS. I don’t know how much weight he had to lose to look like an AIDS patient but he indeed looked sick. No doubt, he delivered an excellent performance. That’s why he is one of my favorite actors. And his appearance in this movie reminds me of a startling photograph in ‘TIME ASIA’ magazine which was taken by John Stanmeyer. The picture depicts a HIV-positive man, lying at a care center in the southern Indian city of Pondicherry, staring not at the camera lens but somewhere far away and his mind preoccupied with thoughts - may be, considering everything that he had built but falling into pieces and not knowing if he could ever put them back together. And at the background, his wife (also HIV-positive) was sleeping on the floor with their son. It was a horrifying moment for me to observe the photograph quite closely and I felt as if I am looking at the picture of a corpse.

Despite many AIDS awareness campaigns, the number of infected HIV cases keeps rising year on year in the developing countries. Last year, According to UNAIDS report, India topped the list with over 400,000 AIDS death in 2005 and 5.7 million people were HIV-positive leaving the Africa behind the race who has 5.5 million HIV infected people. And it indicates that the people are not paying any heed to the awareness campaigns which also coerce me to think that they are turning a blind eye to the warning for sake of lust or a couple of hours of ecstasy. Hence, they pass this deadly virus to their spouses. Eventually, the children who in place of getting the care and love of their parent, they shoulder the burden of taking care of their terminally-ill parents. It may sound somewhat reassuring that the virus can hole up in the body for up to 10 years before triggering symptoms or developing into a full-blown life threatening disease provided the patient maintains healthy diet and put on an Anti-retro viral treatment. However, this is just a flicker of hope only as there is no medicine so far that can cure this terrible disease.

In Africa, HIV is mainly transmitted by sex while Asia is receiving a double whammy of sexual transmission and infection among intravenous drug users (IVDUs). The highest HIV prevalence rates are found in Maharashtra in the west; Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in the south; Manipur and Nagaland in the North-east. And when zeroed in on our state; the official figures of HIV+ case may, at a glance, seem miniscule which reported 76 number of HIV infected cases including 14 AIDS cases a year ago. However, we must not take it for granted the list of individual with HIV positive – because only six districts were surveyed last year. Besides, the figure could deceive as the number of people who actually visit clinic for the HIV test alone is literally negligible. And, in many situations, the cause of AIDS death might attribute to an opportunistic infection, such as tuberculosis. As a result, the HIV+ person may remain unknown of having this terrible disease until they accidentally screen their blood and apprised of the result. Therefore, the AIDS in Arunachal is like a balloon that is being inflated stealthily and is getting ready to burst out in a decade or two if people keep ignoring the admonition.

Aside from benighted people, what disturbs me most is the sex trade that is gaining ground in Arunachal. It has become a cause for concern (for few people I believe, as a matter of fact) as, unlike Manipur and Nagaland, the HIV in Arunachal is contracted mostly through sexual activity. Thus, this sex trade which is often executed in clandestine will not help to control the menace of HIV. On the contrary, the virus will keep proliferating for years until it devours everyone like some horrible leviathan. Secondly, I have a good reason to believe that this illegality is something all parents should be afraid of. For instance, two years ago, I happened to see almost half a dozen of teenage girls were being holed in a police car. I wondered what wrong they could have done - prompting the cops to arrest them. I soon found out the reason behind their arrest when an acquaintance told me if I heard anything about the female sex workers who were arrested and sent back to their hometown. This incident came as a jolt. I’ve never expected our state with all its glory and naiveté could stoop so low as to become a land of pedophilia.

I wondered how these girls were made to fall into the trap of flesh trade and what incites them? I presume the lure of money alone in such a tender age is unwarranted. Is it because our society had made out the glitterati to be more reigning over the literati? And the beauty contests and its price money are given more priorities than the literary competition? Where is the need to reward the beauty queen when we all know inner beauty that counts ultimately? Don’t these things introduce promiscuity to the children at an early age? Is it the girl herself or the parents or the pimps or the society that motivate the girls to opt for sex trade? More importantly, do these girls know how the AIDS virus spread? If we assume the hearsay, then the persons who are already engaged in this profession act as a recruiting agent – enticing the young girls to a wild party and selling them
to clients who usually hunt for fresh product. It pains me to put forward this question: do these clients think they’re doing the right thing by sharing a bed with minor? And there are pimps who again take advantage of their reputation and exploit them to make easy money. Then again, we cannot hold the prostitutes and pimps responsible for entire businesses, though they play a pivotal role. There are some affluent people also who is equally responsible and foster this profession by seeking their services. As for the solution, it doesn’t lie in overlooking the reality or locking up the female child in a closed door room. And the police, I fear, will fail to stop the prostitutes from carrying out their covert operation as long as the recruiting agent looms large and go unpunished. Until then, no one’s daughter is safe from harm as there’s no telling where or when your daughter will be invited to a party. And who knows, those who are hunting for pleasure and seek fresh product might end up introducing himself to his own daughter.

To conclude, it clearly manifests itself from the fact that the AIDS and sex is complimentary to each other. And, in Arunachal, HIV is definitely going to create a wanton havoc as the awareness of this smoldering threat is very low. I am not suggesting in any subtle way that there never was an AIDS awareness campaign. In fact, a lot of half-hearted awareness campaigns were conducted which addressed to a handful of audiences. However, it is not enough. They need to deliver this message to the people who are most vulnerable, not to the Gaon Buras and Buris (village elders). And the people who are assigned to propagate the AIDS awareness should help out spontaneously. Their work should not be cynic and to show off or to extract a fund from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The so-called “cultured elite” of Arunachal may sleep through the perilous hours.

Was CS victim of power struggle between various Nyishi Organisations?

Was the entire ANSU-CS fracas over Chief Secretary's alleged 'anti-Nyishi' stand was actually what it was made out to be or was CS made a 'sacrificial lamb' in the way of legitimizing which Nyishi organization is the true representative of entire Nyishi community? Well, going by the developments of 'anti-Nyishi' stand of CS, as an onlooker, later seems the case if you look at the issue from another perspective.

The entire legitimization issue of Nyishi organization and the rift between various organizations viz., Nyishi Elite Society (NES), All Nyishi Students' Union (ANSU), Nyishi Federal Council (NFC) and All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) started with Nyishi Elite Society (NES) and it’s youth wing All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) disbanding other Nyishi organization’s viz., Nyishi Federal Council (NFC) and All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) terming these organizations as fake and that they (NES & ANSU) and they alone are the only true representative of Nyishi Community as they have been given social sanction. They also notified the government that henceforth all the developmental activities pertaining to Nyishi community be routed through them for approval prior to approval by the government. It made me wonder then and there, can any organization act and decide on behalf of entire community that too without assessing the ground reality prevailing in the far flung areas where their brethren lives. How many of them knows about the ground situations in the places like Radum, Tali, Chayang-Tajo, Sarli, Hebang, Luba etc., to name a few? I bet, a very few only. It’s true that older folks and youngsters do follow whatever these so-called educated elites of the society says, out of respect to them, but does that mean they have got the peoples’ sanction to act on behalf of them? I would say, NO! They have to prove themselves.

Steering back to the topic, the opportunity to prove that they are the true torchbearers of the community came in the form of Chief Secretary's inclusion of nomenclature change from 'Galong' to 'Galo' in the agenda of nomenclature change from 'Dafla' to 'Nyishi'; and ANSU taking this opportunity, made a major issue out of a non-issue even after withdrawal of agenda by Chief Secretary and forced the government to remove the Chief Secretary. A fact finding team headed by RWD and RD Minister Chowna Mein was constituted, who gave Chief Secretary a clean chit and the Chief Secretary was reinstated to his post. NES and ANSU kept mum.

In the bid to prove their pro-community stance, taking this opportunity of NES and ANSU’s silence over Chief Secretary’s reinstatement, NFC and it’s youth wing ANYA started alleging that NES, ANSU and Tabom Bam had entered into a ‘secret-arrangement’ to let Bam continue in his post-of which they had 'concrete evidence' and demanded resignation of presidents of NES and ANSU for their anti community stance. They demanded the government not to allow Bam continue in his post and if allowed threatened to launch a series of agitation. Also, they announced to take up ‘case-wise issue’ to unmask the individuals and agencies involved in corrupt practices.

“The NFC said it would take up ‘case-wise issue’ against public servants, agencies and individuals with disproportionate assets beyond their known sources of income, while the meeting also agreed to draw the state government’s attention to the Nyishi technocrats and bureaucrats who were confining their entire service period in and around the Capital Complex through ‘manipulations’, saying such dubious acts were detrimental to the smooth functioning of the government machinery.”

Though, I laud the declaration by NFC and ANYA that they would raise 'case-wise issue' against corrupt public servants, agencies and individuals, which is good not only for Nyishi community but for entire Arunachal as a whole (atleast in that way some rot in the system would be cleaned), I've my apprehension that they wouldn't stick to what they have declared as soon as they too get social sanction like NES and ANSU ;). Only time will tell.

Now, it seems as if the entire differences between NES, ANSU, NFC and ANYA has been solved. After joint meeting between representatives of these organizations and Nyishi leaders they came out with a joint statement that they are dropping the proposed stir (Capital Bandh today). Good for Tabom Bam, Nyishi community and for general populace (they wouldn't be grind in their power struggle, now). The question now is, would these organizations act together without trying to prove who calls the shot, for benefit of the community? Let's wait and watch.

This entire episode has left me wondering though, if the stand taken by Chief Secretary was 'anti-Nyishi' at all and the fact finding teams report all made up, why NFC and ANYA backed down from proposed stir? Arunachal Diary template fixed!

Phew!

It took me such a long time to sort out the mess with my old template (putting me off from regular blogging for long) to finally come out with this template from scratch retaining some elements from the old template and incorporating some elements from the template, designed for wordpress by Flisterz, that I’d been using for a while.

“Scripts, iframes, and images are unavoidable for many reasons but a minimal use of these can significantly improve response time.”

But, I don’t know how much I’ve succeeded in following his advice (can’t resist from spicing up the blog with third party scripts) to make this blog load faster.

Also, I took note of comments by Pascal and Buru

“Maybe it would be nice also if you add recent comments under your profile.”

“unless you re-institute "Latest Comments"column this blog may stagnate for lack of discussion.”

and hey! You have recent comments widget in the sidebar.

Although, I’ve tested this template, do point out any issues that you may come across.

Arunachal Diary template fixed!

Phew!

It took me such a long time to sort out the mess with my old template (putting me off from regular blogging for long) to finally come out with this template from scratch retaining some elements from the old template and incorporating some elements from the template, designed for wordpress by Flisterz, that I’d been using for a while.

VERACITY- A Weekly News Journal from Roing

For a state scarce with periodicals, journals, magazines etc., and print media being dominated by the likes of The Arunachal Times, Arunachal Front, Echo of Arunachal and Dawnlit Post (the dailies published from the capital which concentrate mainly on the happenings in and around the Capital); it is good to see people coming out with magazines, news journals, periodicals etc. covering news and issues related to their home districts in general and Arunachal as a whole. One such news journal is ‘VERACITY’ published from Roing.

When Raju Mimi, the editor of 'VERACITY', mailed me this pdf version of the 15^th November issue-I was like-Wow! Great layout with well laid out contents. Apart from news items in and around Roing this weekly news journal features articles relevant to local populace and the state as a whole. Incidentally, the 15^th November issue featured my article 'Was the Bangkok trip a success story or a farce?'.

Though I liked the overall presentation of this pdf version of 'VERACITY' (I couldn't get chance to lay my hands on the print version yet), what I found lacking was the quantity of pages and pricing as was case with the ZIRO-MIRROR. The weekly news journal seem overpriced at INR 5/- for 4 pages. But considering the reach of such journals, targeted readers, constraint in circulation and above all the cost involved in bringing out papers or periodicals or journals from a location with minimal facility, I would give them clean chit on the pricing issue. Nevertheless, I hope they would increase the content in a days to come. Overall, I would recommend 'VERACITY' if you want more news on Roing and for it's quality.

State Level Painting Competition on Energy Conservation-2007

The pamphlet distributed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) reads:

"To bring electricity to your doorstep, it takes a minimum investment of around Rs.3-4 Crores per 'megawatt'. A lot of it is in foreign exchange.

Shocking, isn't it?"

Shocking indeed; and how easily would we forget to switch off the electrical appliances when not in use, thereby wasting electricity. To drive home the efficient use of electricity at homes, offices, industries, fields etc., for overall economic growth of the country, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency has been organizing Painting Competition for the students of standard IV and V on the themes of Energy Conservation since past three years under the National Campaign on Energy Conservation.

Coinciding with the Children's Day, the State Level Painting Competition on Energy Conservation-2007 was organized at Banquet Hall, Itanagar on 14^th of November by BEE in association with NHPC and Directorate of School Education, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. Altogether 38 participants, out of 50 selected students from School Level Painting Competition organized at various schools of the state, took part in this State Level Painting Competition on Energy Conservation and showed their creative skills on the following themes: -

1. Global warming is harming.
2. Today's electricity wastage is tomorrow's power shortage.

(Doesn't the themes sound bit tough for standard IV & V students?)

The work of Taku Kuru of Love Dale Residential School, Ziro was adjudged best followed by Arnab Kumar Das of Divine Word School, Roing and third went to Ms. Nani Rima of Kingcup Public School, Itanagar. They bagged cash award of INR 10,000/-, 8,000/- and 5,000/- respectively.

These three winners would take part in the National Level Painting Competition on Energy Conservation scheduled to be held on 12^th of December at New Delhi.

I wish all of them best of their lucks and hope that they would bring laurel to the state by winning the National Level Painting Competition.
